Description
Winters in Portland can bring a number of different types of weather.
It is not a certainty that every winter will produce four to five snowfalls of at least six inches. It is not a guarantee that each year will yield three months of weather with an average daily high temperature of twenty-nine degrees. It is not expected that winter cause at least one "shut down" of the city due to ice or snow. Yet any of these might occur.
We might experience a dry January one year, and the following year we might be met with twenty-five days of rain. Or we could have one year with tremendously windy weather all winter long, yet the next three years might provide us with just one or two truly blustery days.
Winter is a mystery we cannot plan for in Portland.
This February, our winter was unseasonably dry. So much so, the weather experts were predicting a dire draught conditions for the Willamette Valley. (Ironically, rain totals for May set new records. April, May, and June were wet nearly every day!) A winter storm hit us hard in February 2010: blue skies, cold but not freezing temperatures, a constant wind in the East County, and brownish-green lawns.
