I feel as if Portland’s Peninsula Park is the story of Cinderella told in reverse. It began in 1913 as the pride of Portland. Strikingly beautiful, everyone’s attention focused on it and its beauty. It was, indeed, the “belle of the ball”! Yet today it is rarely talked about, rarely seen; still as beautiful as ever, but in a charmingly modest way. For many, she is a treasure locked away in the attic, never to be appreciated. She is relegated to the status of “Second Best”, personality, yet she is hidden and unseen. For certain, she is under overlooked. Her slightly younger and more highly promoted sisters, Portland Rose Gardens and Washington Park. receiving all the attention.


Beauty can fade. Beauty can be forgotten. But beauty can be so pure it never withers.

At 15, Scott suffered a spinal cord injury while playing ice hockey, a sport hed played since he was five. This left him medically defined as a c4 quadriplegic. Scott admits he can be a bit bull-headed at times. He refused to paint following his accident, because he didnt want to hold the brushes using his mouth. To him, painting without using his hands would be as if hed given in to being a quadriplegic. He didnt want that! Unless he could paint like normal people, he didnt want to paint at all. And so he didnt. Finally, in 2003, after much prodding from family and friends, he decided to swallow his pride and try painting. Of course, he first tried holding the brush with his hands. But it didnt work; the brush...
